Though perhaps best known for his fervor for abolition, William Wilberforce’s passion for godliness in the life of believers should not be overshadowed by his political activism. He is oft remembered for his statement, “God Almighty has set before me two great objects, the suppression of the slave trade and the reformation of manners.”

Wilberforce entered politics as an unconverted man, and became a believer shortly thereafter. He labored diligently for the cross and the crown. Not only was he faced with much public criticism, but his body was also plagued with an intestinal disease. Yet he pressed on, devoting himself to his family, his friends, and the Scriptures; and giving his spare time to assist the poor and neglected. He was an exceptional speaker and worked tirelessly for many years before he saw the fruit of his labors.
