Current Restaurant.com Coupon Code: $5 for $25 Certificates

Through May 11, use the code MOM at checkout to get a $25 Restaurant.com certificate for only $5! Not quite as good as $3, but this is a great deal for the beginning of the month when the new restaurant choices are at their maximum. Go here to redeem the code.

Unfamiliar with restaurant.com? Read about it here.

*They’re also offering a $10 De La Flowers Certificate with each restaurant certificate purchase, but with the cost of shipping it’s probably not really worth it.

Saving Money on Gas: BP Card

A few weeks ago I posted several tips for saving money on gas. One of the tips was “buy high quality gas” (regular unleaded, just from a high quality gas station). At my dad’s suggestion, we’ve been buying ours from BP and have noticed a considerable increase in our gas mileage. He had also suggested getting a BP gas card, and one a reader gave also gave the suggestion, along with a scenario of how much it saved each time.

We had been somewhat hesitant to open a credit card; but when we realized how much it could save us, we decided to go ahead and sign up for the BP gas card.  We use it ONLY on gas purchases, but it does have rewards for other spending, too.  Kind of like the next best thing to coupons for gas! ;)

For the first 60 days, you receive 10% back on BP gas purchases, and 5% thereafter.

Birthday Boy

A quarter of a century ago today, a son was born to a young missionary couple in Seoul, South Korea. The birth record reads, “the whole world waits with bated breath…a lovely prince is born and his first cry bursts forth upon the earth.” After their beloved prince was born and his cries had burst forth, they named him Daniel, after the Biblical character, and James, after his paternal grandfather.

A true boy, by the age of 4, he’d already had stitches twice(!). At age 5, it was discovered that he had a rare heart condition. At the time, the only solution was open heart surgery. In God’s providence, it was suggested by Dr. Dreisbach that such an operation be delayed until he was at least 10 years old. During the time of waiting, a new, less-invasive procedure was discovered, and he was one of the first patients to undergo the new procedure…which was successful. Just before the surgery, his parents read in the newspaper about a young man who died of the condition.

At age 11, he wrote this newspaper article (one of many family publications–make sure you check out the graph of Joshua’s increasing badness at the bottom left): :)

In 2001, he returned to the States and began his university studies. During that school year, he nervously introduced himself to his would-be wife. Sadly, she only has a vague recollection of the event.

A summer later, he found himself working at the same Christian camp as her, and they both found the other to be quite interesting. It was before the rise of popularity with digital cameras–thus she only has one picture of them together.

The next school year they did many things as part of a missions-minded group of friends. Things like mud fights in the freezing cold…

and other things like standing in the middle of the ocean together on sharp rocks that will forever leave a visible impression on their feet…

Ahh…those were the days when one could survive for months on end with only 1 load of laundry and 5 hours of sleep a night! They even went on a date…on February 14, of course! Months passed (she even made a giant hut-shaped card for his surprise birthday party–with real clay!), and summer led them worlds apart. Well continents, anyway. He wrote often from Africa, and she from camp. But just as friends. One time, he accidentally signed his letter, “Love, Daniel.” Only she wasn’t sure why.

But after much struggle, she gave it over to the Lord and assumed it must haven been a mistake. (Most likely he copied part of an e-mail to his parents, the sources say.) But God answered both their prayers as they began a more serious relationship a few months later. By the summer they were engaged, and a year later married! And now they are still madly in love, preparing for Madagascar, ministering in their church and neighborhood, have a wonderful daughter…and are celebrating Daniel’s 25th Birthday today!

Happy Birthday, Daniel! :)

Saving Money on Honey

Now that we’ve been making challah on a weekly basis, I’ve realized that we use a bit more honey than in the past. And honey can get quite expensive!

If you’re not too particular about your baking honey, you may want to check your dollar store! Several of our local dollar stores (where it is actually just $1) carry 12 oz. bottles of honey for just $1.

And for all you CVS-ers out there with extra ECB’s, CVS carries honey in the $1 section. (Just make sure that you are actually getting it from the $1 section, as they also carry honey in their regular food section. By the way, the CVS dollar section honey, is actually a blend of corn syrup and honey. ) This is a great money saver for our challah! :)

But we do see Him who was made for a little while lower than the angels, namely, Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone.

For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things, and through whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to perfect the author of their salvation through sufferings.

Sav-Mor Fun

By request, here’s a picture of our “food yard sale” savings from this morning:

My sister joined us again, and did an amazing job at packing all of this into just 2 banana boxes for us! (By the way that is juice in the bottles. :) ) For fun, we decided to calculate what the food would cost at normal price in stores. We came to about $400! For just $12. We are so thankful that the Lord has provided such a fun way to get food inexpensively–and even get lots of “fun” foods (we were looking for granola bars and should be set for months!!)! :)

$25 Restaurant Certificates for $3

Just thought I’d give a heads up that Restaurant.com gift certificates are 70% off right now (through April 30). That means you can get a $25 gift certificate for $3, if you use the code: GOURMET

If you are unfamiliar with Restaurant.com, it is a website that allows you to purchase gift certificates to local restaurants for at least 60% off. If you are purchasing a gift certificate for the amount of $25.00 (and only paying $3 with the current deal), there is usually a requirement that you spend at least $35.00 on the meal. In other words, you’d have to pay at least $10 + $3 (or other gift certificate amount) for $35.00 worth of food. Not bad for a restaurant!

Here’s how to do it:

1. Go to Restaurant.com.

2. Find a restaurant.

3. Purchase certificate. (Use the code: GOURMET right now.)

4. Print out certificate and take to restaurant.

Additional notes: Certificates are usually good for one year. They have a unique code the the restaurant calls in and enters to ensure that it is only used once. Gratuities may be higher when certificates are used (this will be included in the information when you order the certificate). At the beginning of each month, new restaurants are added with a limited number of certificates; but at the end of the month, there is usually some sort of percent off discount.

We’ve used this twice and also given it as part of gifts. We’ve had no problems thus far.

Some Food Lion Deals

After seeing Kendra’s great Food Lion deals last week and previous weeks, I was quite sad that we didn’t have a Food Lion nearby. I’d been wanting to make a special steak dinner for Daniel, so when I got 3(!) fliers advertising Food Lion’s specials this week, I decided that the 15 mile drive wasn’t so far after all. Particularly when they were tripling coupons. :)

Thought I’d pass along a few deals for those with a Food Lion (FL) nearby:

(To my local readers, I went to Piedmont; but there are Food Lions in Spartanburg, Lyman, and Woodruff.)
